Articles
1)Curtain

2) In a clean square tray :
  a) one sheet to cover the patient,
   b) legings to cover the legs.
   c) Mackintosh and draw sheet,  
   d) torch
   e) specimen bottle, if necessary
   f) Pint measure,
   g) Bottle of cheatle's forceps.
3) In a sterile cover tray:
   a) Two urethral rubber catheter of proper size in a sterile bowl.
   b) A bowl containing dry cotton swabs and gauze pieces,
   c) Lotion swabs in a sterile bowl.
4) Sterile anaesthetic jelly as a lubricant to prevent the friction and pain.
5) A pair of gloves or a plain dessecting forceps.
6) Two sterile towels: one to put under waist of the patient and another to cover the lower abdomen.
7) One hole towel.
8) Three sterile kidney trays


Instructions :
1) Infection can occur after catheterization however you have tried to maintain the sterilization. So try to avoid this procedure.
2) Take the written order of doctor.
3) Use the catheter of proper number as per the age of the patient.
4) Never use force to introduce the catheter.
5) Always catheterize in a good light. Arrangement should be made for the good light.
6) When the uriary bladder is fully loaded do not drain it completely to prevent shock.
7) In case of serious or unconcious patient take assistance.


Procedure of catheterization in females:

1) To avoid the cross infection wash your hands clean
2) Then collect all clean and sterile articles .
3) Take all the sterile and clean articles to the right side of the patient
4) Arrange them in such a manner that it will be comfortable for the patient and handy to work.
5) It will save the time and energy.
6) Explain the procedure to the patient and relatives to gain their co-operation.
7) Provide privacy by putting curtain so that the patient will not feel shy.
8) Remove the blanket, fold it and keep it at the foot site of the cot.
9) Cover the patient with a sheet from neck to waist.
10) Place mackintosh and drawsheet under the waist. This procedure must be done by using sterile articles and with non touch technique. Make arrangement for light and then go to wash your hands. Clean your hands from elbow to the nails.
11) Give recumbent position to the patient.
12) Put on gloves.
13) Spread sterile towel under her waist and hole towel on the lower abdomen in such a manner. that hole will come in front of the external genitals.
14) Arrange the sterile articles i.e. Kidney trays, bowl of lotion swabs, forceps and bowl of catheter etc. on a sterile towel.
15) separate the labia.
l6) Clean the external genitals by using lotion swabs with the help of dissecting forceps Cleaning is done as follows.
a) Clean the outer part of labia majora of both sides.
b) Clean the labia minora of both sides.
c) While cleaning first clean the outer part then middle part and then inner part lastly
d) Change the swab each time.
e) Clean these parts from upward to downwards.
I 7) Apply anaesthetic jelly as a lubricant to prevent, friction and pain. See that the eye of catheter will not block, due to jelly.
18) Separate the labia with the left hand thumb and index finger by using sterile gauze pieces. Then insert the catheter gently about two inch and hold the other end of the catheter into the sterile kidney tray.
19) When one kidney tray is full with urine replace it with other sterile one and empty the first kidney tray in pint measure.
20) When the flow of urine ends pull some portion of catheter out and see still the urine is there or not. If necessary give little pressure on the lower abdomen. Then pull out the catheter gently fix a knot and keep it in a empty kidney tray.
21) If there is doctor's order for urine test then send the specimen of urine to the laboratory
22) Remove all the articles. Put on the clothes. Make the bed neat and tidy and then only go to clean the used articles.
23) Record the date, time and amount of urine on the case paper and inform the same to the sister incharge.
